Celebration of Arbor Day

Around the world, Arbor Day is a secular day of observance on which the world plants trees. It is a day to celebrate trees and honor the environment. In the DR Congo, Arbor Day is on December 5. It's an important celebration for Kimbilio every year.

In Lubumbashi, there are several species of trees that are common. Leucaena leucocephala, otherwise known as river tamarind, is common in unplanned neighborhoods. Jacaranda mimosifolia is otherwise known as jacaranda, blue jacaranda, black poui, Nupur or fern tree, and is common in more planned neighborhoods. Other species include the evergreens mango and earleaf acacia. The vegetation changes significantly when you leave the city.

At Kimbilio, the team held activities on Thursday to celebrate the day with the children, with a view to sensitizing them on the importance of taking care of the environment. Each child planted a tree. The children also got to help maintain the jacarandas that were planted in 2021 at the Kimbilio Mapendo School when it first opened.
